“Play The Piano Like a Drummer”
Kelly Zhong
(pianist/California Jazz Conservatory student)
This topic is extremely relevant for any performing pianist. The three vamps we worked on were very different stylistically so that we could see how prevalent vamping is in music. The rhythm and theory worksheets broke down the improv process very well — I was always confused about how to practice improv, and his materials definitely helped me understand the important components and how to practice them effectively. And his ergonomic piano handouts and evaluations of everyone's playing were extremely helpful (I don’t think those aspects are covered as much as they should be by other teachers). Overall, a fantastic workshop!

(pianist/CJC student)
Michael's system for breaking down vamps and starting to improvise on them is ingenious. It also applies to other areas of jazz with repeated patterns, such as Brazilian music. His helpful observations about each student's setup and posture already helped ease pressure on my ankle when pedaling. Michael very generously offered a free coaching lesson between classes to help solidify the concepts. This class should be offered regularly by CJC. Highly recommended!

Thank you for your very useful advice on vamping and the way you organize your teaching so well. I am sure that anyone who follows it can succeed.

I enjoyed the materials and your attention to detail, both in the written materials and in your technical feedback to me and the other students. I look forward to watching the video recording of the sessions and weaving these techniques into my practice routines going forward. Thank you again!
